Raise your standards. Our talents are entrusted to us, like a master putting money into the care of his servants. We are stewards of our wealth, and I define wealth very loosely here, well beyond material possessions.

For example:

If I can write and speak fairly well, those are talents entrusted to me.  I can bury them in the ground out of fear, or I can push out of my shell and strive to create increase for all. If you do nothing with your talents… if you hide them in the ground and hoard them, you are choosing to be lazy and worthless.  You are supposed to invest what you’ve been given.  Don’t be lazy!

It’s never too late to start over. If you weren’t happy with yesterday, try something different today. Don’t stay stuck. Do better.

So what can you do to maximize your talent? Are you constantly learning about yourself, your business, and most importantly, about your client’s business? Do you thirst for knowledge? Do you seek out mentors and coaches?

When you receive coaching, do you listen? Do you implement the suggestions your coaches and mentors suggest? Are you an “old dog who can’t learn new tricks” or do you try new things? Can you admit there are better ways to do things than you are comfortable with? Do you extend your comfort zone? Are you not afraid to fail?

Make sure you are constantly maximizing your natural born sales and management talent.  There is no greater sin in your career development than to have talent and waste it.

Top 5 Ways to Maximize Talent

1. Recognize your own strength and diverse set of skills to put you and your career in the spotlight. (If you’re not sure what your strengths are, try asking friends and family “What do you think I’m good at?” You may also want to reflect on skills that you been complimented on. Next transfer the skills you identified to the realm of work).

2. Put these talents into action. Start by volunteering for projects or take initiative to help others when needed. (Don’t be afraid to talk about your accomplishments with others in a non-boastful way).

3. Focus more on projects and job duties that are a better fit for you, in turn making work more enjoyable.

4. Leverage new and better skill sets.

5. Remain current in your field: if that means working with new people to learn a new skill or learning new chords charts or playing tips. Whatever the case may be, stay current.
